Henry Cavill Struggled With Finding His “character’s place” in Lauren Schmidt Hissrich’s Version of ‘The Witcher’ and We Missed the Clues
The year was 2020, Henry Cavill was still Superman in the DC extended universe, Netflix had not announced that he would be leaving The Witcher, he had featured as Sherlock Holmes for the first time, and life was good. However, the tower of cards that was neatly stacked two years ago came crashing down at an alarming rate towards the end of 2022. The sound of the crash pushed people to come out in support of Henry Cavill and throw a preferably virtual arrow at all those who wronged him.
In the battle that ensued between fans of the British acting virtuoso and his now former projects, James Gunn and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich had to take most, if not all the blows. While Gunn expeditiously saved himself with his masterful filmmaking abilities, Schmidt had little to her favor. This was especially the case as the reason behind Cavill’s The Witcher exit emerged to be a disagreement over the series straying away from the source material. The official announcement only came about towards the end of last year, but Henry Cavill had hinted at it back in 2020.

Discussing Season 2 of The Witcher in the Happy Sad Confused interview, Henry Cavill said, “It’s about finding my place in the overall vision of the showrunner.” The actor further went on to explain that the showrunners and the ensemble casts’ version of The Witcher differ due to valid reasons. Andrzej Sapkowski’s books thrive on Geralt’s point of view. However, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich was opting for a more Ciri and Yennefer perspective.
Unknown to the turmoil, fans were gushing over Geralt’s bathtub scene for months. It was only when the news came about that the audiences clutched their purses at the through of The Witcher sans Henry Cavill’s Geralt. It is clear through his 2020 interview that he was having disagreements with the production. Moreover, his statements about the show becoming more Yennefer and Ciri-centric have come about a full circle.
Season 3 of The Witcher is handing over the Baton to Ciri as she goes through her journey. However, many assumed that this was just a by-product of the Henry Cavill exit. With Liam Hemsworth’s entry, the show becoming less Geralt-centric is actually good news.

Since the premiere, The Witcher Season 3 has been the most identical to Andrzej Sapkowski’s books. From Geralt’s confession to Yennefer to Ciri’s storyline with The Rats it is doing quite a good job at copying the assignment. Yet it seems that Season 3 will be both the rise and fall of the show’s accuracy to the books.
This is not just a fan conclusion but one made through statements by the creators themselves. Especially their claim to switch Henry Cavill to Liam Hemsworth with “lore accuracy“. It has also clear that the show will now be more Ciri-centric as she learns to fight her own battles. With his exit, Henry Cavill is taking away The Witcher‘s focus from Geralt.
