“He looked ridiculous”- Fans Have Already Turned down Henry Cavill as Wolverine Before the MCU Could

If there was one cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine that fans had somewhat anticipated but were also caught off guard by, it was Henry Cavill as Wolverine, or should we say, Cavillrine. Ever since the British actor left his former superhero universe, the DCU, fans have been hoping for him to find a new role in the MCU. Deadpool & Wolverine, seizing on this sentiment in fans, pulled off a flashy cameo with Cavill in the billion-dollar blockbuster. However, it now seems that fans would like this to be limited to just a brief, minute-long appearance and nothing more.

Henry Cavill’s role as Wolverine in the MCU has now become quite polarizing, despite the initial frenzy it caused. Those who have watched him in The Witcher know how well Cavill could handle a character as tough as Wolverine, who speaks few words and has a no-nonsense attitude. However, many fans also feel that Cavill is suited for many characters in the MCU, but not Wolverine. In a Reddit thread, a user compared Cavill’s MCU cameo to that of John Krasinski’s in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Much like Henry Cavill’s cameo, John Krasinski’s appearance in the MCU was seen as just a bait to lure viewers, only to boost the hype for the movie. Even though Krasinski’s Mr. Fantastic, aka Reed Richards, had a bigger role in that movie, his character still ended up dead, and The Office fame would certainly not make a comeback either, considering the MCU has already signed Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards in the upcoming The Fantastic Four. Fans, however, have their own reasons to shoot down Cavill as Wolverine in the MCU.

Redditors have listed their complaints with Cavill as Wolverine, while also suggesting other roles that might be a better fit for the actor.

What makes fans think that Henry Cavill is not the right pick for Wolverine?

A major problem that both Henry Cavill and Hugh Jackman have faced as Wolverine is their physically inaccurate depiction of the character. The entire point of Wolverine is that he is that he is a small guy with a formidable edge, far more threatening than his size would indicate. However, neither Jackman nor Cavill meets this requirement as per fans. Redditors said, “he is way too tall” and “last thing we need is another tall handsome Wolverine”, about Cavill's physicality as Wolverine.

Some fans, however, felt that Cavill looked downright poor compared to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. While some said, "He looked ridiculous” others pointed out the “weird” hair given to his cameo character. Fans also shared their opinions on the thread, suggesting characters like Cyclops, Sabretooth, Gladiator, and Captain Britain as alternatives. Nonetheless, the general consensus is that fans would like to remember Cavill's Wolverine only as a joke and nothing more.
