“There are certain friends that have become a part of you,” 76-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger effectively summarised his friendship with the late Franco Columbu. Pulling himself out of his humble roots and dedicating his life to bodybuilding and his current status was never easy for The Terminator star. In these testing times, he befriended fellow Italian bodybuilder Columbu, who stood beside him for 55 years, until his end of the line.

As troubling as his tragic passing might have come to Schwarzenegger back in 2019, he reflected on those experiences recently and shared his unique perception.

Lifelong companions and a rare testament of genuine friendship, Schwarzenegger and Columbu met each other way back in 1965. From harboring trust at bodybuilding championships to starting a bricklaying business, the duo were near inseparable. Now, in talks with Tim Ferris, the FUBAR star opened up that it was not the immediate shock of Columbu’s passing that haunted him. Rather, his absence every day at the gym, chessboard, and places where they created memories is what left a void in him.

“And so if they pass away and die, something dies in you.” Schwarzenegger’s own words defined what Columbu meant to him. Moving to California together, both of them kick-started their careers with bodybuilding. While the Expendables star won seven, his mate won two Mr. Olympia titles. Additionally, Franco Columbu often starred in minor roles in Schwarzenegger’s hits, such as Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator. “That to me, is heartbreaking,” concluded the star.
