The days leading up to the Barbie premiere were rich with comparisons between Gerwig’s Barbie and its box office sister, Oppenheimer. The debate boiled down to the achievements and brilliance of its creators. Greta Gerwig with a handful of movies and lesser Oscars paled in comparison to the mountain of awards that Christopher Nolan sits on with his films. But as the audience witnessed the cinematic phenomenon that is Barbie, there was a collective chant of her brilliance. This mass realization of Gerwig’s brilliance could not have come at a better time as the director is celebrating her 40th birthday. And to commemorate this event, it seems that the entire universe has conspired to get her the perfect gift.

Much like how the writers of Friends titled each episode as “The one with...” as if they knew it would go on to be pop culture’s Statue of Liberty, it seems like Greta Gerwig too had the intuition that her Barbie was going to be a blockbuster. This is why she knew to release the movie on the 21st of July so that by the time she celebrates her birthday on the 4th of August it would have hit the billion mark. If not, then this is all too sweet of a coincidence, as Barbie has strutted across the $1 Billion line just in time for Gerwig’s birthday weekend.

Gerwig’s Barbie fought against all odds to become the second-biggest blockbuster of 2023 so far. It remains the biggest opener of the year, but the movie is yet to surpass The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

In the never-ending list of reasons why Barbie is a record breaker and will go down in history is its music. Among the plethora of artists that contributed to its soundtrack was Ryan Gosling. Even before Barbie could hit a billion, Gosling hit a smooth chord on the Billboards chart with ‘Just Ken’.

The actor felt that sending a mob of Kens to give Greta Gerwig a surprise performance of the hit track while she does her morning pilates is the most Ken-tastic gift. And then following the trope of the movie, the Kens were sidelined by a bunch of Barbies as they dance to Dua Lipa’s hit track ‘Dance The Night’. All the while, Greta Gerwig represented the audience when they watched her movie as she cried, overwhelmed, in a corner.
