Greta Gerwig Becomes the First Female Director to Touch 1 Billion Leaving ‘Oppenheimer’ Miles Behind
When Margot Robbie approached Greta Gerwig to write the script for Barbie in 2019, little did she know that they would, in fact, write history together. Later, taking on the role of the director as well, Gerwig alongside Robbie as a producer created a cinematic masterpiece that hit theaters on 21st July. In less than a month after its release, Barbie has now already hit the billion mark at the box office. Making Gerwig the first ever female to direct a movie to achieve this feat, Barbie is surely going to go down in history as a milestone for womankind.
Painting the screen in its pink hues, the flick was met with fierce competition from Oppenheimer which released on the same day. Cinema fanatics wondered if a film based on children’s toys could stand its own in the face of a Christopher Nolan project. And now that the results are out, the doubts have subsided.

A movie’s impact is judged by a lot more than how much it grosses at the box office. But its monetary success is an undeniably important factor, nonetheless. Placing in second behind Super Mario Bros, Barbie leaves Oppenheimer, which is currently in seventh place, far behind. With a difference of almost half a billion between them, it is clear that there’s no stopping Barbie now.
Following close behind are two Marvel movies, namely Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Across the Spider-Verse securing their spots in the top 5. Disney’s The Little Mermaid also deserves a special mention having faced a lot of flack for having a diversified cast and still placing before Oppenheimer in sixth place.
Considering that she managed this victory as a solo female director, Greta Gerwig now has another celebration lined up after her recent birthday surprise. Meanwhile, the makers of the flick have an important message for a special group of people.

The video opens with an “Okay ladies, let’s do this.” And it is safe to say that the ladies, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig have officially done it.
