Prince Harry and Meghan Markle undoubtedly set the bar too high as their record-breaking Netflix hit skyrocketed on the American streamer. Having garnered a staggering 81.55 million viewing hours in the premiere week, the tell-all emerged as the second-best series for Netflix. However, as their popularity reached unimaginable proportions, so did the expectations attached to the stirring royal docuseries. Breaking back-to-back records for the streamer, the Netflix bombshell was sure to gather a similar number of accolades. However, this is where the estranged couple fell on their face.
The Variety list of Emmy Awards Nominations for the year 2023 drew the curtains for the Sussexes and their Hollywood dreams. The million-dollar worth revelations of the British Crown evidently did not sum up for the esteemed Television Academy Awards. As inevitable as it was, the unexpected snub generated a whole lot of backlashes and criticism, although some were kind enough to leave the Sussexes with some pieces of advice.

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, royal expert and editor Ingrid Seward said it will be difficult for the Sussexes to come out of the anti-royal bubble. “They have built a gilded cage of expectation around themselves,” believes Seward. And undoubtedly so, it will be much harder for them “to escape” the same. Elaborating on the dilemma, the expert said even if the couple chooses to focus on more serious work, people will always be invested in what goes on in their personal life.

The oust from the Award show was definitely one of the tremendous blows to the Sussexes. However, it is not all over for them yet. While the Emmy Awards ditched the couple big time, the prestigious Hollywood Critics Award has nominated the series for an eminent category.

The HCA has selected the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tell-all docuseries for the Best Streaming Non-fiction series for 2023. Word has it that the couple is “secretly pleased” with the same. Nonetheless, royal experts have taken their must-take jibe at their award nod as well. Evening Standard’s royal editor remarked the series does not count as Non-fiction. However, it would have bagged an award for the best fiction series for sure.
