George Clooney sat down with Deadline recently for a Q&A session. During the conversation, the interviewer pointed out how his breakout show ER will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year. In his response, he recalled that his show and the iconic sitcom Friends aired the same year. He revealed that his costars and the cast members of the comedy-drama were all together sitting backstage. “None of us were stars, but Tony Edwards was the most famous person, and Courteney Cox,” he said.
According to him, everyone knew both of the actors when they got on their respective shows. The American actress has starred as Lauren Miller in the NBC sitcom Family Ties from 1987 to 1989. She was already a television star, but her role as Monica Geller extended that fame internationally. The Descendants star then described that the trailers of their shows were presented, after which they took to the stage.
“And I remember at that moment thinking, this is a really special moment,” added Clooney. In the continued conversation, the Emmy winner reminisced about his friendship with Matthew Perry, who passed away in October in his LA home.

George Clooney told Deadline he knew Matthew Perry long before when he starred in Friends. The actor used to play paddle tennis with him when Perry was a 16-year-old boy. “He’s about 10 years younger than me. And he was a great, funny, funny, funny kid,” explained the Ticket to Paradise star. He also revealed the Almost Heroes star was passionate about acting and all he talked about was getting on a sitcom.
His wish came true, and he became the iconic incarnation of Chandler Bing. However, all that fame did not bring him joy and peace pointed out Clooney. The filmmaker pointed out Perry’s struggle with addiction and felt remorse for not knowing what he was going through. Meanwhile, Matthew Perry did find solace in the later years of his life when he started his foundation and helped other people.
