For the ten years that Friends aired, its characters seemingly had made their nests deep within fans’ hearts. From Jennifer Aniston’s timeless fashion sense as Rachel Green to David Schwimmer’s dance of love with the former, the cast left a long-lasting impression. Speaking of love, one story made its way off the screens after its on-screen debut. No, as much as fans would believe it was Joey actor Matt LeBlanc, it actually was his roommate and wingman, Chandler Bing actor, Matthew Perry, and guest star Julia Roberts.

Contrary to the brief flicker that their love lasted on camera, it was deeper than time itself in reality. However, what actually is heartbreaking is the real reason why Perry felt the need to let go.

Julia Roberts made her way onto Friends in season 2, episode 13, titled The One After the Superbowl: Part 2. Filling in as Chandler Bing’s childhood friend, the duo had a brief fling on the show. However, off the cameras, there lay a stack of faxed poems and a heartfelt song of love. Yet, as deep as their love was, Matthew Perry revealed in his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Things, that he broke up with Julia Roberts because he felt that he “was not enough.”

“I was broken, bent, unlovable,” the actor added. It is no secret that Matthew Perry had to battle with addiction throughout and even after his time on Friends. As such, on one of the occasions, he felt that eventually, Roberts would go on to part ways with him because he was unworthy of her. As saddening as it may have hit his heart, Perry’s feeling of lack of self-worth eventually led him to renounce Roberts.

Matthew Perry’s memoir is filled with pages that describe his battles with addiction. Throughout his life, he has tried to overcome opioid and alcohol abuse. An overuse of which had put him in a two-week-long coma in 2018, with doctors giving him a mere two percent chance of survival. However, the actor made it back alive and has ever since tried to get a hold of his life while maintaining sobriety.

Remarkably, Perry is at a much better point in life, as was evident in his recent public appearance. Meanwhile, his book has pages that describe his “lifetime of feeling abandoned,” owing to his addictions. The same were the very reasons why his stature varied vastly between the seasons of Friends going from a bleak 58kgs on Season 7 to 106kgs at times. Despite all he has given to fans to cherish, Perry did have a hard time mending his own life back.
