One can not talk about Matt LeBlanc without mentioning his defining role as Joey Tribbiani. The American sitcom Friends had a powerful cast of six, but none of them had a story nearly as dynamic as Joey’s. Apart from being a charmer, Tribbiani had the best one-liners and catchphrases. Phrases like “How you doin’” and “Joey doesn’t share food” made him the most quotable character, generating numerous memes and merchandise. However, as the show progressed, his intelligence took a nosedive.

James Burrows, who directed 15 episodes of the Emmy Award-winning show, shared a lot of valuable insights in his memoir about his directorial ventures. The director revealed that it was a conscious, creative decision about Joey’s dim-wittedness. But why was it done though?

After Helen Baxendale’s lack of chemistry, Burrows’ memoir revealed yet another insight about Friends. From eating potpourri to not getting air quotes, one can tell that Joey was not as bright as his other friends. However, that became the catalyst for some of the most iconic “Joey” moments in Friends. In Burrow’s book, Directed By James Burrows, the director revealed why the creators decided to dumb down Joey after a few episodes. As per Burrows, Joey was way too similar to his on-screen pal Chandler Bing and was “too smart” initially.

Friends won hearts with its unique group of cast. Each of the characters had a unique personality and represented an array of people, making the show relatable. Because of this reason, the makers had to “dumb down” the character to make him distinct among the friends, especially Chandler Bing. The Frasier director wrote in his book “They “dumbed” him down a bit so the two characters wouldn’t play in each other’s wheelhouse”.

Joey and Chandler have been inseparable since the beginning of the show. They not only set the highest standards for roommates but also made fans teary with their adorable camaraderie. Throughout Joey’s struggling phase, Chandler helped his bracelet buddy without a moment’s thought. And when the soap actor finally got his big shot in the movie and could only take one friend to the screening, he chose Chandler to show his gratitude. Apart from these heartfelt moments, the duo also had their own clashes.

One of the fights between the sitcom buddies was because of Cathy, played by Paget Brewster. Nevertheless, Joey stepped aside for Chandler’s love and forgave his betrayal. Even after Chandler moved in with Monica, the two stayed tight-knit and had each other’s back. Despite ending up alone in the series, unlike the other friends, Joey got his own room at Chandler and Monica’s residence. Their endearing chemistry is still a reason for many to revisit the show and get some serious friendship goals.
