Fresh off ‘Bad Boys’ Success, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence Already Eyeing a Return
Having achieved the highest-grossing R-rated opening since Oppenheimer’s summer release last July, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have made it clear that no one quite matches the Bad Boys' style. Currently, Bad Boys: Ride or Die stands as Smith’s sixth-highest US/Canada opening of his career, and for Lawrence, it marks his 8th No.1 domestic opening. Yet for the Bad Boys, revitalizing the summer of 2024 is not enough, as the cop duo now aims to delight fans with another comeback.
The Bad Boys are seemingly preparing to return for a fifth installment, and who knows? The forthcoming summer box office might just become their domain once again.

Jerry Bruckheimer has undoubtedly revitalized the summer box office with the $56 million opening of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, coupled with an impressive audience score on the Tomatometer. Yet, Bruckheimer shows no signs of slowing down with the Bad Boys franchise, as he gears up to potentially usher in another installment for future summer lineups. In a recent interview with Deadline, Bruckheimer addressed the early development of a fifth Bad Boys movie, indicating that discussions have already begun.
Bruckheimer mentioned that initial talks have taken place, but the team wants to assess the film's performance at the box office before moving forward with further discussions later this week. Although this might serve as a preemptive teaser for fans, considering Bad Boys: Ride or Die marks Bruckheimer’s 28th No.1 opening, it seems only natural for him to contemplate further ventures into the Bad Boys universe.
Moving further in the conversation, Bruckheimer also addressed another question that has toiled the fans for long about the duration between the Bad Boys installments.

So far, four Bad Boys films have been released in theaters, beginning in 1995, then 2003, followed by 2020, and most recently in 2024. Despite significant gaps between the first three installments, the delay for the fourth film was notably shorter, a decision Jerry Bruckheimer recently discussed with Deadline. According to Bruckheimer, Sony and Tom Rothman were eager to push forward with Bad Boys: Ride or Die without delay. He explained that everyone involved, from Will Smith and Martin Lawrence to the directors and writers, was committed to moving quickly.
Bruckheimer emphasized that in today's world, which is often dominated by serious news, people are seeking ways to escape the daily grind. The Bad Boys team saw the theater as the perfect place for escapism, aiming to provide audiences with something they have been missing: a healthy dose of laughter. Therefore, there was an urgency to bring fans together and make them laugh. Given Bruckheimer's intent to spread positivity through laughter, what better way to kick off a laughter fest than with Bad Boys 5?
