The Terminator star had an insightful conversation with Tim Ferris. He talked about a lot of things, including his thoughts about salesmanship. While talking about it, Schwarzenegger remembered how most of the actors from the ’70s and ’80s refused to sell their work. However, because the 76-year-old actor had studied selling, he did it well and took the honor of doing so. He revealed, “No matter what you have; if you have a podcast, if you have a movie, if you have a painting, if you have a car, a technology, a medicine, whatever it is, if people don’t know about it, it’s nothing.”
The actor emphasized how crucial selling is, revealing that the more people are familiar with your product or talent, the more likely you are to succeed. Therefore, the idea of selling, publicizing, marketing, communicating, and convincing was an art, according to the Predator star. Moreover, he also noted how the art agencies (marketing agencies) have been earning millions of dollars by doing just that.
To prove his point, the former bodybuilder also shared an example of his personal experience. When he was 15, he started working at a store where he learned the art of selling. He remembered how his boss asked him to observe while he sold the tiles to the customers. A couple came in to buy tiles and Schwarzenegger’s boss sold them what they needed. At the end of their interaction and satisfied experience, the boss asked little Arnold about his learnings. But he failed to catch the minute detail, his boss wanted him to catch. So, what did he really learn?

The 15-year-old Arnold’s boss explained to him that he had to switch his attention between the couple. Initially, the boss thought it was the man who was the customer. However, the way the woman was answering questions, he realized it was actually her, while her partner was just paying the bills. Nevertheless, the boss also kept the man in the loop despite asking all the questions to the woman.
So, the Commando actor realized then, “that selling is an art, that you have to improvise and adjust all the time.” Since that day, he carried the lesson with him and learned the use of his language while meeting fans, the audience, and the Washington legislators. The way Arnold Schwarzenegger once shared the mantra of success by citing his own examples, in the same way, he easily shared the importance of salesmanship.
