Forget Antony Starr, Another Superhero Actor Is Joining James Gunn’s DCU as Booster Gold
James Gunn’s upcoming DC reboot is shaping up to be even more exciting by the day. As Gunn prepares to kick off the new universe with Superman, the filmmaker is also putting the pieces together to continue the smooth flow of the first wave of films and television series following the 2025 film. DCU’s first phase, also known as Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, will introduce several other superheroes who have never made it to the cinematic universe before. This also includes the cocky time-traveler, Booster Gold.
After days of speculation about The Boys’ Antony Starr in the role, the studio has made its pick for Booster Gold actor clear to fans.

It was rumored that Antony Starr was going to play Booster Gold in the DCU, now that The Boys is nearing towards its end. However, in an interview with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused, Starr himself dismissed all the rumors once and for all. And now Nexus Point News has reported that Kumail Nanjiani has been chosen for the role of Booster Gold in James Gunn's DCU.
This will not be Nanjiani's first superhero role. The Pakistani-American actor played the cosmic superhero Kingo in the 2021 Marvel film Eternals. However, the movie’s poor reception took a toll on Nanjiani, leading him to seek counseling after its release. Nonetheless, with another major superhero break, he will likely revive his career in the genre. But, Booster Gold is not exactly a superhero.
James Gunn had the best description of how the DCU would take on the standalone Booster Gold project in the making.

Booster Gold is more of a time traveler who travels to the past using future technology. However, he never quite fit the brackets of a traditional superhero. It was first announced in January 2023 that DCU is planning a Booster Gold project through an announcement video by James Gunn. The studio executive described the upcoming show as “the superhero story of imposter syndrome” and Booster Gold, the character, as a “loser from the future”.
Booster Gold has had a few appearances in DC live-action projects in the past, including Smallville and Legends of Tomorrow. However, these were all supporting roles. The James Gunn series will mark the first time that Booster Gold will have its own standalone project. And even though fans might not be used to this character in a starring role, with Kumail Nanjiani's comedic touch, Booster Gold could actually make a Deadpool or Harley Quinn-style impact in the superhero world.
