It is merely the start of the new year and the Sussexes are already under the attacks of trolling and public ridicule. Despite them skipping one of the season’s major awards shows, host Jo Koy took the opportunity to pull their legs in his opening monologue. While cracking jokes about other celebs like Leonardo DiCaprio and Bradley Cooper, he took a jab at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry by referencing the TV series Succession, which later cleaned up at the Golden Globes. 

Koy also commented on the couple’s perceived struggles, sense of entitlement, and alleged lack of productivity. But this was not the first time the Sussexes faced such public ribbing at award events. In the star-studded gathering of music’s elite in Los Angeles on a Sunday night, Trevor Noah could not let a peculiar detail from the Duke of Sussex’s January book release slip by unnoticed. The playful banter went down as the 38-year-old South African host brought James Corden on stage to hand out an award, right when Beyoncé was making Grammy history. Trevor Noah playfully teased Prince Harry’s “frost-bitten” story from his memoir, Spare. 

Starting with cheers for James Corden, Trevor Noah playfully stated, “He is also living proof that a man can move from London to L.A. and not tell everyone about his frost-bitten p**is”. This drew a flurry of reactions on social media, adding to the continuous light-hearted teasing of Prince Harry that kicked off at the Grammys.

Rebel Wilson threw shade at the Sussexes during BAFTA 2022

Rebel Wilson, the Australian actress in charge of hosting the BAFTA 2022 awards, took a cheeky dig at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Oprah Winfrey interview. While overseeing the awards ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall on a Sunday night, the Ghost Rider actress humorously pointed out that the interview had all the bells and whistles, from drama to fantasy, but, it did not make the cut for the outstanding British Film category at BAFTAs 2022.

This episode firmly drew battle lines between Rebel Wilson and Meghan Markle, a feud that came to light on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in 2023. The 43-year-old Bridesmaids star detailed the awkward interaction with the Sussexes on the show and shared that Markle gave her a cold treatment. Although Wilson could not pinpoint the exact reason for Markle’s frostiness, eagle-eyed fans connected it to the BAFTA episode.

Wilson, however, was not the only one who had things to say about the infamous Oprah Winfrey interview with the Sussexes. 

Emmy Awards 2021 mocked the Oprah Winfrey bombshell

The Emmy Awards 2021 turned the royal family into the subject of jokes in the aftermath of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey. Cedric the Entertainer led the way as the host for the Emmys 2021 and could not resist making light of the royal family while referencing the shocking revelations. Addressing the Hollywood A-listers, the comedian humorously remarked that as great as The Crown was, it was like a storm in a teacup compared to the drama of the Oprah Winfrey interview.

Taking swipes at the monarchy, he expressed his shock at the couple’s claim regarding a senior royal’s inquiry into Prince Archie’s skin tone. The comedian then humorously suggested that the royals could tap into Prince Archie’s social media prowess and playfully envisioned a TikTok collaboration between Queen Elizabeth and her grandson. Quite bold, huh?

When those trolling Meghan Markle and Prince Harry snagged a Golden Globes

This time around, the award show did not take a direct shot at the Sussexes but rather awarded the comedian and the show that had ribbed them. Ricky Gervais recently celebrated his win at the Golden Globe Awards for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television. He secured the accolade for his controversial Netflix special, Armageddon. Interestingly, it was in the same Netflix special where he took a harsh jab at Meghan Markle, dubbing her the “Tabloid Princess”. 

In the show, the comedian allegedly slammed accusations at Markle for being a phony humanitarian and a hypocrite. As per Gervais, Markle compelled Prince Harry to distance himself from his family and country. The comedian also alleged that Markle controlled Prince Harry’s life and fabricated stories about the royal family and the British press. To make matters worse, Gervais argued that Markle strategically played the victim card for sympathy and attention.
