5 Reasons ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Can Join the $1 Billion Club

Published 07/17/2024, 2:40 AM EDT

Deadpool & Wolverine has been flashing all the signs of a blockbuster ever since its trailer dropped. The trailer itself garnered 365 million views in just 24 hours. On top of that, the movie has broken all pre-sale records, with over 200,000 tickets sold two months ahead of its launch. Despite all the signs clearly showing that the two superheroes are here to save Marvel from its slump, a section of critics believes that Deadpool & Wolverine will not gross over $800 million at the box office.

While that would still be enough to help Marvel recoup its losses, there are plenty of reasons to think that the 2024 movie will fly past $800 million.

All the comic book fans have probably prayed for this day. Logan and Wade Wilson have always had a love-hate bromance, much like the real-life bond of the leads, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. From the trailer, it is clear that Wolverine is going to be the grumpy solemn hero who just wants to be left alone, while Deadpool would constantly try to tick him off. And on top of everything, the fandom can not wait to see Wolverine getting understandably annoyed and puzzled by Deadpool’s fourth wall breaking.

Apart from the chaotic dynamics that Deadpool & Wolverine has in store, seeing the two X-Men heroes team up to fight enemies is like Marvel making everyone’s dream come true. This fusion is not only going to be action-packed but will also be ridiculously funny, which is exactly what one expects from Deadpool movies.

History of Deadpool and Logan movie business

Deadpool was Ryan Reynolds' first major franchise of his own. The movie had a budget of $58 million. And even Reynolds could not have predicted that it would become the highest-grossing X-Men film that year, bringing in $783.1 million worldwide. The sequel, with a slightly larger production budget of $110 million, also hit it big. It was the seventh most profitable release in 2018, according to Deadline Hollywood.

Even Hugh Jackman’s Logan had a similar success story. The 2017 release grossed $619.2 million worldwide, against a production budget of $97 million. Considering the box office results of these individual superhero movies, it is easy to see why the crossover could up the 'must-see' factor and attract even more fans to the theaters.

Exciting cameo possibilities

Ever since Deadpool & Wolverine’s production began, there have been tons of rumors and speculations about potential cameos in the movie. From Taylor Swift and Daniel Radcliffe to Blake Lively, fans have been examining every clue and Easter egg like a crime scene. This is also a magnet for theater-goers, especially considering that some of these cameos could be the next big thing in pop culture.

For instance, having Taylor Swift in the movie would mean that Swifties and MCU buffs could finally gather under one roof. Meanwhile, Blake Lively’s Lady Deadpool rumors would be spot on since she is already the real-life wife of the guy behind the red and black mask. There are also chances that some former live-action characters from Fox's X-Men franchise would join Deadpool & Wolverine.

Deadpool finally becomes a part of the MCU

Deadpool & Wolverine would finally tie Fox's X-Men movie franchise into the MCU officially. This automatically means there would be more unexpected and wild twists in the multiverse narrative of the MCU. So far, it is unclear whether Deadpool or Wolverine will be part of Avengers: Secret War, but the upcoming movie will certainly have some Avengers cameos, which was also made clear at CinemaCon 2024.

As fans saw at the end of Deadpool 2, the Merc with a Mouth messes with the timelines, which would likely put the TVA on his tail, as seen in the trailer as well. There could be the introduction of never-before-seen villains that need both the Avengers and X-Men to team up, or Deadpool could merge the realities of the Disney MCU with the Fox franchises, bringing them all together compatibly.

While the possibilities are endless, Deadpool & Wolverine is definitely the most intriguing twist in Marvel’s multiverse saga.

2023 was not a great year for superheroes, even for Disney. Movies like The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania bombed at the box office, becoming the lowest-grossing releases ever to come from Marvel Studios. In fact, since 2021, Marvel has only had one movie that hit the billion-dollar mark, despite having released 18 movies and streaming shows in the past three to four years alone. In this situation, Deadpool & Wolverine is the last hope that could pull superhero films out of the fire for the studio.

In a bid to avoid Marvel fatigue, the studio is putting all its eggs in one basket with Deadpool & Wolverine this year, and they have even delayed the other movies. This also means that they will put their best foot forward in ensuring that it will compensate for all the box-office bombs the studio has released in recent years, adding another reason why the upcoming movie is going to be a billion-dollar grosser.
