The Marvel Cinematic Universe is on a mission to reclaim its blockbuster box office slate as it slowly but steadily recovers from the mega-slump, leaning on the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine’s coattails. As the studio prepares to embark on its era of rejuvenation with fresh strategies, the upcoming Avengers films, set to release from the MCU’s shoulder, have emerged with an interesting update. A recent report suggests the MCU veterans, the Russo brothers, might take the baton of the forthcoming Avengers films and fans cannot keep calm anymore.

Joe and Anthony Russo, the filmmaking brothers behind the stratospheric success of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, may be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed that the Russo brothers are in preliminary discussions to direct 2026's Avengers (formerly known as The Kang Dynasty) and 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars, which will wrap up the Multiverse Saga of the MCU. The films are expected to interlink via the two-part story of 2018’s Infinity War and 2019’s Endgame.

Marvel Studios has been searching for directors to helm the ambitious back-to-back Avengers films following Destin Daniel Cretton's departure from The Kang Dynasty in 2023. Although Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool & Wolverine, was considered for the role, he may have declined the opportunity given the ongoing discussions with the Russo brothers. On a positive note, Michael Waldron, creator of Loki, was recently brought on board to write the screenplay for The Kang Dynasty. However, Avengers: Secret Wars still lacks one.

Fans, however, are particularly excited about the possibility of the Russo brothers directing the Avengers projects, given their successful track record with the MCU and the Avengers slate.

Fans are ready for the Russo brothers to call the Avengers to assemble

The Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, have directed four Marvel films including 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, the sixth biggest-grossing movie in history with $2.05 billion, and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the second-biggest with $2.79 billion. While the figures are enough to vouch for the brothers’ mastery, fans have added their own to attest to it.

Many fans believe the movies will be "epic" only if the Russo brothers accept the project. Others think the MCU could secure a safety net by convincing the brothers to return.

Therefore, assuming the responsibility solely lies with the studio to bring back blockbuster hits would be a mistake. Success also depends significantly on meeting audience expectations and desires. And fortunately, with the Russo brothers being considered, there is a renewed vote of confidence from fans.
