These days, the sheer number of sequels and spinoffs that dominate media markets just to make a quick buck is enough to make anyone's head spin. Studios know they can cash in on audiences who prefer to stick with franchises they already know. But since the driving force behind these sequels and remakes is usually money, studios often end up throwing the original movie’s ending under the bus just to squeeze more life out of the franchise. Now, the Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire seems to be caught in the same trap. 

Slumdog Millionaire, the most successful British independent film of all time, both critically and commercially, is now in talks for a sequel. According to a recent report from Variety, Bridge7- a newly formed production banner created by producer Swati Shetty, who previously worked at Netflix, and former CAA agent Grant Kessman- has managed to secure the rights to the film. That said, it is still not confirmed whether any of the original actors, Dev Patel and Frieda Pinto, will return for the sequel.

Dev Patel has gone on to make a name for himself in the nearly two decades since his breakthrough role in Danny Boyle's drama. He was most recently seen in Monkey Man- which was also his directorial debut, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, and The Green Knight. Meanwhile, Frieda Pinto has made her mark across the UK and the US, starring in films like Immortals, The Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Intrusion, just to name a few. As for the fans, they are not on board with the idea of a sequel to Slumdog Millionaire.

Fans have taken to X to voice how unnecessary this whole sequel idea is, fearing it could end up wrecking the original masterpiece.

Slumdog Millionaire, like many films, gave fans the kind of happy ending they could finally breathe easy with after two hours of emotional rollercoaster. While the Bollywood-style dance number with the leads, surrounded by all the other dancers, was a bit of a hit-or-miss for some, it still gave fans the closure they were looking for. Now, many feel a sequel would just mess with the movie’s perfect ending.

Many fans have said the movie should just be left alone, arguing that a sequel is totally unnecessary.

There were, however, a few who were actually looking forward to it.

Updates on the potential Slumdog Millionaire sequel are very few. The only thing that has been confirmed is that it will focus on “the next chapter of Jamal’s journey,” according to Celador International chairman Paul Smith. But whether it will have the same impact as the original or end up spoiling the charm of the first movie as well is yet to be seen.
