Fans Come Out to Defend Jenna Ortega, Against 'Same Role' Allegations Following 'Death of a Unicorn' Trailer

Jenna Ortega became a household name after her breakout role in Netflix’s Wednesday. Since then, she has only kept the momentum going with Scream 6 and her cameo in Sabrina Carpenter’s iconic music video. But, as surprising as it sounds, some people are already tired of seeing the 22-year-old on screen- despite the fact that she is just getting started as a mainstream star. Ortega's loyal supporters recently came to her defense after accusations surfaced that she is too monotone and plays the same kind of roles over and over again.

The chatter started after the trailer for Death of a Unicorn, a dark comedy starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd, dropped. A few critics claimed the trailer showed Ortega doing what she has always done. Most of her recent projects do share a horror-comedy vibe—Wednesday, Scream 6, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice . Even her 'Taste' music video leaned into the same genre, with many nods to classics like Death Becomes Her.

This led some critics to suggest that Ortega is stuck in a loop, always playing the brooding teenager dealing with spooky situations and a side of humor. But her fans were not having it- and they are not wrong. Icons like Jamie Lee Curtis, Linnea Quigley, and Barbara Crampton built legendary careers starring in plenty of horror films- and no one gave them grief for it. So why should Ortega be treated any differently?

Jenna Ortega fans come to her rescue amid Death of a Unicorn trailer backlash

Many critics say that they do not actually have anything against Jenna Ortega- in fact, most of them think she is a talented actress. The issue is they are feeling a little burned out from seeing her everywhere lately, perhaps even in the MCU now. After the release of Death of a Unicorn, some fans even joked that Ortega was relying too much on her 'vape-and-septum-piercing' aesthetic, which they felt played into her reputation for portraying miserable teenagers. Of course, her fans quickly came to her defense.

Many of her supporters pointed out that Ortega is only 22 and still in the early days of her career. They argued that she has plenty of time to explore different roles and work with a variety of filmmakers.

For now, though, Jenna Ortega is this generation's scream queen. And a big-name star like her could, indeed, bring the much-needed respect to horror genre, which is usually not taken seriously. She has a way of bringing grounded, believable energy to even such dark roles. And judging by the passionate defenses her fans have been posting all over X, they are totally fine with her being everywhere for the time being.
