Henry Cavill is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors to ever play Superman. Fans are no strangers to the incredible legacy the British actor left behind as the Man of Steel. Not only did he play the role flawlessly, but Cavill also played a huge role in popularising the character. However, throughout his run as Superman, the British star only had one film of his own. While the actor has bid farewell to the role now, there was a time Cavill was all set to don his Kryptonian suit for Man of Steel 2.

Prior to retiring from the role of Superman, Cavill made his much-awaited comeback with Black Adam. Returning to the screens after years, fans were hoping for the actor to stay. At the same time, rumors about a sequel to the 2013 film Man of Steel surfaced online too. As per reports by The DirectPeaky Blinders writer Travis Knight was set to pen down the script for Man of Steel 2. There were no directors attached to the project.

That project, however, never saw the light of the day. The reports further read that the development of the project drew to a crawl. It was during the time when DC was going through a major shift in its management. James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the franchise. Apparently, Warner Bros. was not thrilled with the idea of a sequel to Man of Steel.

It did not take long for Gunn to take some shocking decisions that devastated the entire fandom. Not only did he scrap the idea of Man of Steel 2, but he also axed Cavill from the role of Superman. Meanwhile, a rumor even suggested that the script for Man of Steel 2 failed to impress the heads, so they decided to move forward with Superman: Legacy.

When will Superman: Legacy release?

Superman: Legacy is perhaps one of the most awaited films for the DC fandom. Now that David Corenswet will be taking over the Superman mantle, the fans are eager to see where the actor takes it. A few days back, Gunn announced that the film will be releasing on July 11, 2025.

Superman: Legacy will also mark the start of the new movie canon at DC. As we all know, Gunn will be writing and directing the upcoming film. Apart from Corenswet, multiple other superheroes from the universe will be joining Superman in the upcoming film.
