Trigger warnings have become a staple in theatre programs, giving audiences a heads-up about scenes depicting violence, abuse, loud noises, and even smoking. These alerts are meant to brace sensitive viewers for potentially tough content. However, not everyone is on board with this trend. After actors like Ralph Fiennes suggested in an interview with the BBC earlier this year that theatergoers had “gone soft,” British actress Judi Dench also decided to chime in. And her take was not all that different. 

The actress voiced her aversion to the idea of using trigger warnings in theaters and proposed an alternative for those who feel these warnings are needed.  

Dame Judi Dench, an icon of British cinema, has added her voice to the ongoing debate surrounding trigger warnings in theater. The acclaimed actress, who has a knack for speaking her mind, has openly expressed her confusion regarding these pre-show alerts. During an interview with the Radio Times, Dench had some straight talk for “sensitive” audience regarding these warnings: “If you’re that sensitive, don’t go to the theatre". 

In fact, Dench seemed more worried that trigger warnings strip audiences of the element of surprise and shock. She felt that these alerts detract from the raw impact of theater. The 89-year-old actress expressed surprise upon learning that audiences were regularly cautioned about potentially distressing content. “Do they do that?” Dench told the Radio Times, “It must be a pretty long trigger warning before King Lear or Titus Andronicus”. However, theaters are not the only platforms under the scrutiny of sensitive audiences.
