The Taj Mahal in India stands serene with its paramount beauty, not because of the one-of-a-kind marble used in its construction, its divine symmetry, the fact that it changes colors depending on the time of the day, but because it is symbolic of the love that a prince had for his princess. While the monument has remained beautiful for more than three centuries, it shines the brightest in the presence of British royals. This is why when Meghan Markle visited India in 2016, numerous eyes sparkled in hopes of seeing the phenomenon.

News of Prince Harry finding true love in an American television actress broke out in 2016 after the couple had spent significant time together. Therefore, when Markle embarked on her trip to the subcontinent with World Vision to educate young girls, fans were hoping to see history repeat itself through a photo of Markle posing in front of the Taj Mahal. But the Duchess was deprived of this right because of Prince Harry’s warning.

In his memoir, Spare, the Prince opened up about the time he instructed Meghan Markle to not pose in front of the Taj Mahal on her visit to India. “‘Do not take a photo in front of the Taj Mahal,” he had said.

When the Duchess inquired why she should miss out on such an opportunity, Prince Harry simply replied, “My mum“.

He writes that this was his attempt to protect Markle from being compared to his mother, who had sat alone at the monument of love while news of her crumbling marriage with King Charles touched new heights.

The Duke of Sussexes’ recollection in his memoir of going to extreme measures to avoid comparisons between Meghan Markle and Princess Diana did not sit right with fans. There have been countless occasions where Prince Harry has himself compared his wife to his late mother. Be it when he said they would be thick as thieves or stating how “similar” their tastes are, the Spare author loves to make the connection.

Such comparisons by Prince Harry and one too many outfits of Meghan Markle being inspired by Princess Diana enraged netizens. This is why netizens find his blaming of the media for comparisons between his wife and late mother a serious case of the pot calling the kettle black.
