According to a report by The Mirror, the Sussexes had reportedly requested to live in Windsor Castle after their marriage, seeking "living quarters" within the historic residence. However, Queen Elizabeth II "politely but firmly suggested" that they reside in nearby Frogmore Cottage instead. This decision reflected the tradition that only the monarch and their spouse, Prince Philip, occupied private apartments within the castle.
Windsor Castle held sentimental value for the Sussexes, being the site of their wedding and Archie's christening. Royal author Hugo Vickers noted that the castle's private apartments have empty bedrooms and suites, which might have appealed to the young family. Nevertheless, it was considered "not entirely appropriate to have a young couple living there", said Royal author and historian Hugo Vickers.
More so, royal aides and experts emphasized Windsor's significance to the Sussexes, making the Queen's alternative offer of Frogmore Cottage a suitable compromise.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were expected to accept the ruling respectfully
In her book The New Royals, Katie Nicholl revealed the significance of Queen Elizabeth II's gift of Frogmore Cottage to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Lady Elizabeth Anson, a late royal cousin, shared insights into the Queen's thoughtful gesture. Nicholl wrote, "The cottage was a big deal... The Queen's entrance into the gardens is right next to their cottage". She reported how it was essentially her backyard, her solitude, and her privacy.

By gifting Frogmore Cottage, the Queen sacrificed her personal space, trusting the couple to respect her privacy. Lady Anson recalled the Queen saying, "I hope they'll respect it." Despite rejecting their request to live in Windsor Castle, the Queen's generous offer of Frogmore Cottage demonstrated her willingness to accommodate them, with the understanding that they would honor her boundaries. As of now, they have also been "kicked off" their royal residence as they live unfazed across the sea, in California.
