In the ever-evolving Tinseltown where artists embark on the starship as fast as they fall, some actors have a reputation for endurance and resilience second to none. While some find their niches in specific genres, actors like Tom Hanks are habituated to turn tables on such trajectories with an incredible range from comedy to drama. However, even with a career spanning across four decades, and an estimated 900 films to his credits, Hanks recently made a shocking revelation that cut the ground from under.

Despite his illustrious career, when probed a bit further, Hanks considered a single-figure digit of what he considers as good films from his own shelf.

Tom Hanks recently appeared for an interview with Happy Sad Confused podcast where Josh Horowitz recounted a separate conversation from a couple years ago where the actor admitted to have done maybe four quality films. While Hanks could not help but let out a loud giggle, cutting down on his modesty, he doubled that number to 8 movies out of 900 film credits that he finds are “pretty good.”

Horowitz jokingly countered with some A-lister directors' names like Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg to ask whether they dialed him up for a revelation if they made they cut. While Hanks said they know how it works, he went on to explain how he tends to see his own movies maybe once or “one time and a half.” The actor added that every time he looks back at one of his earlier works, he is reminded of what the others did in the scene more than himself.

Tom Hanks may have had a wide range of portrayals in his four decades of career, but a call from Marvel Cinematic Universe or the new DC Universe was not one of them. In his conversation with Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused podcast, Hanks revealed how comic book movies never really worried him but he has been seeing a shift in the audience’s perspective from VFX-coded spectacles to more faithful storytelling.

2024 has been one year of comic book adaptation riches with some giving the much-needed box office boost while the others falling flat on the face. Taking 1970s and 80s as his lean back palette, Hanks added that despite the lack of technology then, audience never had to brainstorm about, “what is the story?” However, now that this question is more prevalent than ever, Hanks sees this comic adaptation evolution as a receptive revolution where again, the quantity of films do not translate to audience’s acceptance.
