Tinseltown may glitter with movie stars, but behind the curtain of flashing lights are the visionaries who give that dazzle its shine. Among them stands Hans Zimmer—a maestro whose name resonates through the corridors of Hollywood almost as loudly as the scores he composes. Though his signature sound has earned him a seat at the table with Hollywood’s elite, even a legend can face an impossible choice. Zimmer found himself in a bit of a bind when asked to choose his favorite among his many iconic scores. 

A tough ask, no doubt—but in the end, Zimmer gave the edge to a certain comic book classic. And truth be told, the cinephiles would understand why.

Renowned for crafting the sonic soul of blockbusters, Hans Zimmer has become a go-to collaborator for cinematic titans like Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, and Ridley Scott. However, he was found navigating through a Gordian knot when Reece Feldman, aka the guywithamoviecamera on Instagram, put him in a sticky situation with a This or That edition of original movie scores. Though Zimmer had to scramble for shelter at a point, he did not disappoint, crowning The Dark Knight above all.

When it came to The Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Gladiator, Zimmer gave The Lion King the edge twice. However, after being given the choice of Inception, he had to move on. Just when fans thought Zimmer clearly had a favorite, favoring Interstellar over Inception, Dune, Thelma & Louise, Sherlock Holmes leaped ahead. Yet, with the door flung open for The Dark Knight, Zimmer could no longer stall the crown.

Though Hans Zimmer had a clear winner with The Dark Knight, he revealed a lesser-known aspect of his involvement in The Lion King and why it was special despite his initial disinterest.

When Reece Feldman put Hans Zimmer in a quagmire with a This or That edition of his own movie scores, the latter let The Lion King get ahead in the race initially. However, before picking it over Gladiator, he revealed that The Lion King score was dedicated to his daughter. Zimmer had no intention of doing The Lion King, primarily because it is an animation. Yet, the movie was a surprise for him, which tells the story of losing one’s father.

Zimmer’s father passed away when he was only 6, and he never really dealt with the loss in the past until it came to The Lion King. He moved on with the rest of the round, but during the segment of selection between Interstellar and Dune, he added that he was not done with the latter yet. Although the future will tell if Dune has the potential to outrank his comic favorite, one can only hope it does not invite another row of heartbreak as was experienced with the Academy’s decision to disqualify his Dune: Part Two score.
