Meghan Markle and Prince Harry recently traveled to Colombia for a second tour this year, following their trip to Nigeria, sparking considerable criticism, with many viewing it as a tour reminiscent of royal engagements. Since officially stepping down from their roles as working royals and relocating to the US, the Sussexes have faced ongoing backlash, whether related to their philanthropic efforts, business pursuits, or their memoirs and the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan. Despite these challenges, the impact of their Netflix docuseries led the Vice President of Colombia to extend the invitation to the couple.

During their four-day visit to Colombia, the Vice President acknowledged how Harry & Meghan were crucial in captivating public interest, especially hers.

On August 15, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex began their four-day, activity-filled trip to Colombia, following an invitation from Vice President Francia Márquez, the first Black woman to hold the role. During a press conference on the same day, the Vice President shared the profound impact of the Netflix series Harry & Meghan, which “deeply moved” her to offer Meghan Markle and Prince Harry a warm welcome to her nation.

The Vice President recalled first learning about the Duke and Duchess through the media, but it was the 2022 Netflix docuseries that truly inspired her. She allegedly felt compelled by their story and became convinced that Markle, in particular, was someone deserving of visiting their country and sharing her narrative. Márquez explained that a significant part of her motivation for inviting the Sussexes was to support and empower women globally.

The arrival of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in Colombia stirred both intrigue and backlash, but this did not deter Vice President Francia Márquez, who had already extended an invitation to the Duchess. Márquez, who also serves as Colombia’s Minister for Equality and Equity, revealed at a press conference on August 15 that she had previously invited Markle to participate in the Day of Afro-descendant Women, celebrated annually on July 25.

Márquez admitted, "At that time, we sent her an invitation letter," but later revealed that Markle was unable to visit. While the Duchess was reportedly enthusiastic about the trip and keen to learn more about their country, she could not make it back then. However, she has since made up for the missed opportunity, and now she appears ready to spread positivity alongside Prince Harry with their visit.
