From the get-go, the makers of Deadpool & Wolverine have been teasing jaw-dropping cameos for the 2024 release. And they were not messing around. The Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer has truly delivered some scream-out-loud moments in theaters. One of the craziest cameos, which no one saw coming, was Henry Cavill as Wolverine. Although it was known that he would be joining the MCU after leaving DC, this cameo was particularly surprising. But what does it mean for Cavill’s future in the MCU?

Will he ultimately replace Hugh Jackman as the face of the mutant superhero, marking the end of an era?

Henry Cavill appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine during a chaotic montage, while Deadpool was busy tracking down Logan. Though his appearance was brief and dialogue-free, there is a chance fans might see a Wolverine-centric movie with The Witcher actor taking the lead in the MCU. However, with rumors about Hugh Jackman keen on being part of Avengers: Secret Wars, albeit with some conditions, the MCU might save Cavill till the 2027 movie, when Jackman could finally pass the torch of his iconic character.

That said, Deadpool & Wolverine made it clear that the MCU and the X-Men franchise will collide in Secret Wars. In fact, the entire premise of the latest release hinged on Logan's death putting Deadpool's universe in jeopardy. This makes it even more crucial for Logan to officially rejoin the main X-Men universe. Given that the Wolverine role still seems firmly in Jackman’s hands, it is possible that Cavill’s cameo was just a playful nod to his superhero past. On top of that, there is already another Logan successor in sight.

Many fans believe that Hugh Jackman will pass his legacy to his cloned daughter. Dafne Keen, who portrayed the young X-23 in Logan, made a surprise appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, although the trailer had already given away her cameo. According to a popular theory by Austin Medeiros, Marvel Studios will not replace Hugh Jackman as Logan or Wolverine. Instead, the studio will have Dafne Keen continue playing the character in the MCU.

This means X-23 will be the new Wolverine for the next X-Men team, only if the rumored reboot of the MCU happens after Avengers: Secret Wars. The rising action star Keen has already made an impression in Logan and, more recently, in The Acolyte, where she was one of the best-ever lightsaber duels in Star Wars history. Considering how well she could step into Hugh Jackman's shoes, it is uncertain whether Henry Cavill’s Wolverine cameo will lead to a permanent role in the MCU.
