‘Deadpool’ Creator Rob Liefeld Takes Brutal Swipes at Kevin Feige Following ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Tanking

Published 02/24/2025, 8:15 PM EST

Just when Marvel fans thought they were ready for a heroic comeback after Deadpool & Wolverine smashed the box office last year, Captain America: Brave New World swooped in like a rogue villain, dealing a gut punch to Avengers’ legacy. As if Kevin Feige and the Marvel brass are not already drowning in turbulence, thanks to Justin Baldoni’s lawsuit crashing down like Thor’s hammer, things turned darker with Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld cutting ties with the studio. But Leifeld is not just walking away; he is aiming his verbal vibranium straight at Feige and company.

If his past revelations were enough to send shockwaves through the fandom, Liefeld’s latest take proves he is done playing nice.

Captain America: Brave New World debuted to a reasonably strong $100 million this month. But according to a recent report from Variety, the movie fell flat at the box office with a 68% drop in its second weekend, leading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s third biggest drop after The Marvels (78%) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (69%). As soon as the news broke out, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld took to X, taking shots at Kevin Feige, saying, “Get Feige off the mound. He’s spent.”

Though the statement is quite blunt and bold for a Marvel insider like Liefeld, it is not exactly shocking after his recent public fallout with Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige, specifically. Although Brave New World was not exactly curing the superhero fatigue, having already spearheaded itself into Marvel’s hall of misfires, Liefeld’s latest jab holds Feige guilty of charge behind the studio’s failing era. The reports show Brave New World cost $180 million before marketing. And so far, it has earned $289.4 worldwide.

Captain America: Brave New World’s early ratings on sites like Rotten Tomatoes already had Marvel fans begging the studio to slow down. But it looks like Marvel has not learned from its mistakes.

Captain America: Brave New World makes Marvel favoritism all the tougher

After Captain America: Brave New World’s eyebrow-raising box office drop, senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian told Variety, “this is the new normal for Marvel movies.” He did not snatch away the superhero appeal from the projects per se, admitting it could likely “threepeat at the box office.” However, the situation translates to fan favoritism falling by the minute since this is not the kind of audience reception Marvel is used to.

Technically, not all Marvel movies have gone towards the bottom ranks. Last year’s record-shattering blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine had a strong run which opened to $211 and dropped 53% in its second weekend to $97 million. However, there is no denying the post-Endgame curse is real and Brave New World could walk into the camp, making reclamation a far-fetched superhero dream.
