In the glittery galaxy of fame, where stars shine or fade, every opportunity can be a game-changer for an artist. Sure, it is impossible to predict which gig will make or break a career—some folks have that star quality, and others, well, do not. But sometimes even stars with top-notch qualities can stumble when it comes to mapping out their path to lasting legacy. For David Schwimmer, the beloved Friends icon, the show was already a massive career launchpad. But, like every star, he has had his what-could-have-been moments, like passing up on a certain blockbuster Will Smith movie.

Though Schwimmer never let it dim his shine, it definitely sparked some introspection even decades after the events.

On a recent episode of the Origins With Cush Jumbo podcast, David Schwimmer spilled the beans about passing on the blockbuster Men in Black franchise led by Will Smith. When asked if it was because of scheduling conflicts with Friends, Schwimmer set the record straight while revealing that he chose to direct his first feature film instead, calling it a “brutal decision.” As luck would have it, his directorial debut overlapped with Men in Black filming, leaving Schwimmer to make a make-or-break choice.

“We’re in pre-production, hired the whole crew, everything’s going, and that’s when I was offered Men in Black,” Schwimmer recalled. He admitted he knew the film could have skyrocketed his career, but was also weighing how it might affect his relationships with everyone involved in his theater company and production. Even though he is still not entirely sure if it was the “right choice,” he is at peace knowing he followed his heart.

Will Smith is a hero, and that is no secret. His heroism extends from the screen to real life, thanks to one key Men in Black moment. In 2012, Barry Sonnenfeld recalled a call from Smith, as quoted by Vulture, who pitched an idea for the third movie in the series. This third installment, which revitalized the franchise after a less thrilling second film, was built on Smith’s concept.

“The basic idea was that Will’s character, Agent J, would have to go back into the past to save his partner,” said Sonnenfeld. This not only shows that Smith was a hero who embraced the franchise but also a superhero who steered it toward its billion-dollar success. While David Schwimmer passed on his opportunity to make his career shine elsewhere, Smith took the reins of the franchise like the true hero he is to build a reputation that eclipses every iconic franchise.
