Nineteen Steps is a romance based during the shambles of the Second World War. The lead character named Nellie Morris finds herself at a difficult junction between two lovers. Amidst the backdrop of Nazi bombs and Bethnal Green tube station, there is a mention of an unsafe staircase, reiterated again and again. Jessa Crispin wrote a review for The Telegraph and found this particularly irritating. She was “crying just thinking about it.”

The one aspect of her novel that irked her was the constant reiteration of very simple and general plot lines. One such example that Crispin pointed out read, “She wanted adventure. Excitement, adventure, travel–she’d so often spoken of such things with longing, and she wanted to travel, to see the world.”

Topics like wars are something that has been widely covered in the media. The features of wars, especially death, destruction, food shortage, and pain of loss are recurring. World War II was not different, if not worse. Brown’s 19-year-old self reiterates such common facts while Crispin also pointed out the fact that British and Americans love painting beautiful romances during a time of bloodshed.
