Commemarating Meghan Markle’s Rescue Dog Bogart on International Dog Day: A Sad Tale Told by Prince Harry
It is often a subject of discussion about how Meghan Markle is a foreigner. However, this piece of information is mostly used to portray her as a pickle in the British family. While it is true that Markle did leave her home to join Prince Harry in the United Kingdom, in the grand scheme of things, many forget that she had to leave behind everything she knew to call her home. Including her dog.
As the world celebrates International Dog Day on the 26th of August, it is hard not to be reminded of the rescue dog that Markle had to give up.

As the Duchess of Sussex made the big shift from the United Kingdom to the United States, perhaps the most precious belonging that she left behind was her dog, Bogart. The Sussexes shared love for him has played into making the dog a superstar of sorts. So much so, that he even got a mention in Prince Harry‘s bombshell memoir, Spare.
In his memoir, Prince Harry recalls the drastic change in the dog’s demeanor after the news of their dating broke out. How the aggressive ringing of the bell and the siege of Markle’s house had turned him into a “guard dog“, and she ultimately had to give him up.
The dog, as the Duchess of Sussex, stated in her post-engagement interview with BBC 2018, now lived with a close friend of hers. While she had to let one Bogart go, the Duchess was lucky enough to keep one poodle of joy to herself.

While she left Bogard behind, she brought with her another rescue beagle to the United Kingdom. The former actress then went on to become a patron of several rescue houses for dogs. She visited them regularly, even when she was heavily pregnant with Prince Archie. If her dedication as a patron was not clear enough through her visits, then perhaps a look at how many rescue dogs the Sussexes own will help.
In 2022, the Duke of Sussex, in a chat with WellChild Award Winners, opened up about how calming it is to have a dog despite the chaos they create. He even let fans in on their names, Pula, Guy, and Mia, out of which Guy and Mia are rescue dogs.
