Following Oppenheimer’s atomic success and the Oscar victory of Cillian Murphy, his return to the action genre has sparked anticipation among viewers craving more. To satisfy this demand for entertainment, Murphy has taken it upon himself to rejuvenate his breakthrough performance from the 2002 sci-fi horror, 28 Days Later, through the creation of 28 Years Later.

Almost 22 years later, the zombie thriller reenters the spotlight, with Murphy assuming the role of executive producer. However, the prevailing question remains: is it indeed a sequel to the original film or a standalone trilogy in its own right?

Following a hiatus spanning nearly two decades, Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have reunited for 28 Years Later, a project produced by Cillian Murphy. In 2002, Murphy's career soared with his lead role in 28 Days Later, marking a breakthrough moment. However, details regarding his role in the upcoming installment, titled 28 Years Later, remain under wraps. Amidst this uncertainty, fans ponder whether this film is a sequel or a standalone trilogy. To dispel confusion, 28 Years Later serves as both, thus constituting a trilogy sequel to 28 Days Later.

In 2007, the sequel 28 Weeks Later followed the 2002 hit film. Subsequently, discussions arose about a potential movie titled 28 Months Later, intended as a follow-up to the 2007 release. However, given the passage of time, the team has now opted for 28 Years Later. To clarify any misconceptions, this new trilogy by Sony is entirely independent of 28 Weeks Later and will solely progress the narrative from 28 Days Later. Therefore, the Sony trilogy serves as a direct sequel to 28 Days Later rather than 28 Weeks Later.

Previously, alongside the announcement of 28 Years Later, news surfaced regarding the director tapped to helm the first film, none other than Danny Boyle, the original director of 28 Days Later. With the green light for the second installment, Sony has turned its attention to Nia DaCosta, as indicated by a recent report from Deadline, suggesting discussions for her involvement in the second film.

Additionally, Alex Garland has been confirmed to pen the scripts for both films. The report further states Boyle's intention to commence directing the first film later this year, with production on the second slated to follow immediately after the first wraps. While plot specifics and Cillian Murphy's potential involvement remain undisclosed, Jodie Comer has been secured to lead the initial installment. However, as a trilogy, many details remain veiled.
