A recent Deadline report reveals that Christopher Nolan is headed back to the studio that helped him dominate this year’s Oscar season. Sources say Nolan has teamed up with Universal again for his next big film, slated for an IMAX release on July 17, 2026. Adding to the excitement, Matt Damon is reportedly in early negotiations to star. The fun fact is this release date aligns with several of Nolan’s previous blockbuster premieres.
The plot is still top secret, but insiders say filming is set to kick off in early 2025. If all goes well, this will be Matt Damon’s third collaboration with Nolan, following his roles in Interstellar (2014) and the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer (2023). With this, Damon joins the elite club of actors, like Christian Bale and Cillian Murphy, who have teamed up with Nolan at least three times.
It is not just Nolan gearing up for an award season victory lap ahead of 2026 as Steven Spielberg is jumping into the race as well, ready to claim his own spotlight.

The studio is already hyping it up as an "event film."
Kristie Macosko Krieger will be producing the film. Spielberg has dabbled in extraterrestrial themes before with classics like Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), E.T., and War of the Worlds (2005).
