The 77th BAFTA ceremony in London ended on a resounding high for Christopher Nolan as Oppenheimer led the tally of wins with a magnificent seven, followed by Poor Things at five. The 2023 summer flick won across the major categories, including best film, best director, best actor, best supporting actor, cinematography, editing, and original score. Moreover, the tally also saw the movie miss out on strongly contended titles of best actress and adapted screenplay.

The 2024 BAFTA wins also marked the first time that Christopher Nolan won the prestigious British laurel as a director. As a standing ovation greeted the 53-year-old walking up to collect the award, his heartfelt speech evoked positive reactions in reciprocation. “Thank you for taking on something quite dark and seeing the potential in it,” he addressed while thanking the British Academy for the “incredible honor”. Remarkably, the win for the director came after many snubs of five BAFTA nominations.

The accomplishments for Oppenheimer came close on the heels of the film ushering in extravaganza in the recently concluded 81st Golden Globe Awards. Coincidentally, that event also marked Nolan winning his first award on that platform for best director even as his movie won the Best Picture – Drama award. By all means, the leading tide for Oppenheimer may well be a precursor for the upcoming Oscars, where it has already established its dominance in nominations.

Thereafter, Cillian Murphy thanked his “Oppen-homies” in his flair of elegance, while accepting the Best Actor BAFTA. The honor came as he won for the second time on the British stage after his Best Male Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama win, for Breakfast on Pluto in 2006. Finally, in his speech, he too thanked Nolan for Oppenheimer with “Thanks for seeing something in me that I didn’t see in myself,” amid resounding claps from the audience.
