Spider-Man could be stepping up to fill the void left by Iron Man in the MCU. While that might be an exaggeration, for now, Peter Parker is not going to play the teenage sidekick in the Avengers movies anymore. Tom Holland is set to take on a much more prominent role in the cinematic universe moving forward. So much so that he might overshadow the most anticipated entry, or rather re-entry, into the universe.

Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman recently revealed that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will have his biggest role in the Avengers franchise yet in Avengers: Doomsday. This report was followed by another insider revelation of all the projects the wall-crawling superhero will be a part of. In fact, his role could even eclipse that of Reed Richards in Doomsday, soon to be played by Pedro Pascal. This points to yet another departure from the original comic storyline, considering the rivalry between Doom and Richards is regarded as Marvel's most legendary feud.

Their history stretches back to their university days, when Victor, aka Doctor Doom, and Reed met and quickly found themselves on opposing sides in an intellectual rivalry. This animosity deepened after Doom blamed Richards for the accident that led to his facial scarring. Given their fraught history, elevating Spider-Man's role in Doomsday over that of Reed Richards might leave Marvel fans feeling a bit let down.

5 MCU Characters That Should Kill Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom in ‘Secret Wars'

Fans have taken to social media to express their concerns about the Marvel studio's direction with Spider-Man in the upcoming movies.

Fans doubt Spider-Man’s lead role in Avengers: Doomsday

Spider-Man has really become a key player in the MCU since Endgame. However, a big part of his story is tied to his relationship with the late Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr. And it is this hope for the character to reunite with his late mentor- albeit in a twisted form- in Avengers: Doomsday that the MCU would most likely be banking on. However, brushing aside a legendary comic history just for the sake of a mentor-to-villain arc is still not sitting right with fans. A fan even stated that "casting RDJ as Doom is the biggest mistake ever".

Fans have been quick to criticize the MCU for messing with the original comic storyline once again.

That said, there is one scenario where giving Peter Parker a bigger role would really make sense- if the MCU follows the Civil War II storyline, where Doctor Doom takes on Iron Man’s role. With Downey Jr. set to portray Doom in both Avengers: Doomsday and its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, there is a good chance fans might finally see the beloved return of Iron Man and his heartwarming bond with Spider-Man.
