Better Than Ryan Gosling? Glen Powell Lands Surprising Praises From Hollywood Producer

In cinema, it is rare for stars to maintain a steady climb. A name that dominated the tabloids just months ago can quickly fall out of favor, while another ascends. Last year, Ryan Gosling captivated audiences with an outrageous blockbuster that sparked the cinematic showdown of Barbenheimer throughout the awards season. Meanwhile, Glen Powell's Anyone But You, fueled an era of rom-com returns. However, in an unexpected twist, a Hollywood producer has placed Powell on a pedestal higher than the Academy favorite.

While both Gosling and Powell achieved success with their box office hits, Powell’s ability to outshine Gosling, despite Barbie’s undeniable dominance during the awards season, naturally raises questions about the reasons behind such an endorsement.

Why did the Tinseltown producer champion Glen Powell instead of Ryan Gosling?

In TheWrap’s recent analysis of Glen Powell as a rising star of the 21st century, the publication cited an anonymous Hollywood producer who commented following the success of Twisters, which grossed over $335 million worldwide, and Anyone But You’s gradual climb to $220 million in theaters before Netflix’s acquisition in the spring. “Unlike an actor like Ryan Gosling, whose appeal is mostly limited to female audiences, Glen appeals to both females and males,” the producer remarked.

The producer asserts that Powell is undeniably a rising star, as audiences flock to theaters to see him. Although his and Sydney Sweeney’s bet on Anyone But You is well known, Powell’s path to superstardom has been akin to a high-stakes casino, with each step toward fame representing a gamble on his talent. Nonetheless, with producers comparing him to stars like Gosling, there is little doubt that Powell is on the brink of even greater success.

In April of this year, TheWrap reported that Glen Powell is slated to star in a new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man for Paramount Pictures. Edgar Wright is set to direct the film, with Michael Bacall joining him to co-write the story, while Bacall will also handle the scriptwriting. The project has recently been approved to start production in November. The Running Man is Stephen King's futuristic sci-fi thriller set in a dystopian America in 2025.

The narrative focuses on Ben Richards, a desperate man who enters a brutal reality show to win money to save his gravely ill daughter. The book was previously adapted into a film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987. However, an insider familiar with the upcoming adaptation suggests it will be a more faithful rendition of King’s novel. The key question now is whether Powell's elevated stakes will allow him to do justice to the source material.
