Half of its name, the star power of Will Smith, the benchmark of quality storytelling, and a few 90s references trickled in here and there, is all that Jabari Banks' Bel-Air has taken from its original, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The reimagined version of the 90s sitcom has been creating waves at every step of the way, especially as it steps into Season 3.

With fans already knee-deep into the series, it has become clear as day that despite Smith's association and the name, the two are worlds apart, and Jabari Banks reveals just why that is the case.

For those who rejoiced at the news of Will Smith becoming the executive producer of a series titled, Bel-Air expecting for it to be a slapstick-comedy sit-com just like the one they fell in love with in the 90s, the plot of Bel-Air was beyond surprising. Unlike the sitcom, Bel-Air deals with real issues that are relevant in today's times, and as per Jabari Banks' statement on HOT 97, the "goal was to be authentic to the times."

The young actor went as far as to say that had they actually made the show a fun sitcom, the chances of it hitting it off would have been zero to none. Therefore, while 'Gettin' Jiggy Wit It', Bel-Air also ensured to keep things as profound as possible and even opted for a mystery element, to keep the audiences hooked.

While Banks may believe that promoting the series as the fun sitcom it borrows half of its name from may not have worked in its favor, he has no qualms about Will Smith and the legend that he is.

While Bel-Air has amassed a good original following of its own owing to the spectacular plot and phenomenal acting, there is no denying that the charm lies in its association with Will Smith. And Jabari Banks, despite being the main character of the show, does not disagree. In fact, the actor during his HOT 97 interview talked candidly about how much of a help Will Smith had been.

Will Smith did his part in mentoring the young actor as an executive producer while making sure to remain respectful of his beliefs. Keeping in mind Jabari Banks' opinion of how the new Bel-Air cannot lean too much into the old one, Smith made sure to give the actor room to birth his own iconic character, while also providing a boost with his trademark character.
