The upcoming spy flick Argylle, which stars some of the biggest names in Hollywood today, was shot under the guidance of the legendary filmmaker Matthew Vaughn. Before landing this highly anticipated project, Vaughn had lent his expertise to various other action thrillers. Most notable, is the humorous spy saga that essentially redefined the espionage genre, Kingsman: The Secret Service. Known for his visionary approach, he has previously directed the hit DC superhero movie, X-Men: First Class as well.

However, it was a different superhero flick that placed him in an awkward position many years ago with Avatar director James Cameron.

While speaking to Josh Horowitz during a Happy Sad Confused interview, the British director relayed an incident that occurred during the promotion of his 2010 flick Kick-Ass. When he showed up at Comic-Con to promote it, he was next in line after James Cameron’s Avatar. While he was intimidated by Cameron at first, he later realized that “being the underdog helps” sometimes. Since Avatar was yet to “soar”, he revealed that Kick-Ass received much more fanfare than he anticipated.

After all, he did bring a fresh and audacious take on the superhero genre with Kick-Ass. Similarly, he is attempting to now do the same with Argylle’s spy genre. By pioneering the combination of sharp wit and heart-pounding action sequences through Kick-Ass, the director had clearly won the audiences over at Comic Con way before the movie was deemed an official hit. Now, fans of his work wonder if he can replicate that excellence with Argylle.

When the trailer for Argylle dropped last month, it was bound to cause a stir owing to its star cast, and it did. Well, even the 52-year-old director of the movie remarked that he was especially “excited” about the trailer itself. After having made it so it does not give away the “best bits” of the movie, he reassured fans that they had “seen nothing” yet compared to the actual movie.

With so many megastars like Dua Lipa, Henry Cavill and John Cena headlining Argylle’s cast, it is safe to say that the espionage film is already awaited by a huge audience. With Vaughn’s promises regarding what is in store, the excitement has surely gone up. It seems like those who were already impressed by the trailer may just have a treat in store.
