Barely a Week After Giving Fans a Dream 2026, ‘The Batman II’ Ruins It With Hopes of a Grand Payoff

The Batman was one of DC’s biggest successes in recent years, both critically and at the box office. However, the film was released during a time of major change for the DCEU. This sparked a lot of queries on how DC can build on the success of Robert Pattinson’s film to benefit its shared universe. And recently, there has been a big update about Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel that seems to touch on this very question.

For fans anxiously counting down the days to The Batman II, there is some bad news, again. But before throwing Batarangs in frustration, there is also a glimmer of hope about where the DCU and the Pattinson sequel might be heading next.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Batman Part II will not be gracing our screens as soon as expected. Originally set to release in October 2025, the film has now been pushed back to October 1, 2027. That means there are two whole extra years to wait for more of Robert Pattinson’s perfect jawline in a cowl. Meanwhile, The Brave and the Bold, another Batman-related project, is delayed as well. On the same day the delay for The Batman Part II was announced, director Andy Muschietti confirmed that The Brave and the Bold was also being put on ice.

Speaking on the California Secreta podcast, Muschietti shared, "The Batman [The Brave and The Bold] project has been postponed a little bit so I might do another film before that." The Hollywood Reporter also revealed that The Batman Part II will not even keep that title. Could this mean a shift toward something that fits into the larger DCU? Either way, with a four-year wait, there is plenty of time for speculations.

Meanwhile, James Gunn—DCU’s unofficial king of teasing—has been dropping hints about the film’s script on Instagram threads.

James Gunn weighs in on The Batman Part II's DCU integration

When a fan recently asked James Gunn directly whether the rumors about The Batman Part II being delayed were true, he confirmed, writing, "Sure. Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script". This lack of a finished script has already caused another anticipated project to get axed. Gunn mentioned that while parts of The Batman Part II’s script are done, the full thing is still in the works.

Gunn was also asked on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast whether he had thought about pulling The Batman into the DCU proper. He said, “I contemplate everything and talk about everything,” he said. At the moment, Gunn seems committed to Elseworlds stories. But given the success of The Batman, it would make a lot of sense to find a way to bring Robert Pattinson’s moody hero into the fold.
