During an exclusive interview with the BBC’s The One Show in the year 2016, Jennifer Aniston revealed that the entire Friends cast hated the iconic opening credit song ‘I’ll Be There for You,’ as well as the Central Park fountain in front of which they filmed the song. Further, she revealed, “No one was a big fan of that theme song.” While sharing her thoughts on the trademark fountain, she said, “We felt it was a little… I don’t know,’ adding, ‘Dancing in a pond?” Further, the actress revealed that they only did it because they were told to do so.

The beloved series made viewers gaga over its perfect comic timing and the beloved theme song that many can sing word for word. But the producers had another theme song in mind. As per a 2019 interview with NME, initially, the producers wanted ‘Shiny Happy People’ by R.E.M. to be the official theme song, but the band turned down the opportunity. So, they brought The Rembrandts into the scene and gave fans the iconic ‘I’ll be there for you’ song.

The Rembrandts only wrote half of the song, and the other half was co-written by Michael Skloff and Allee Willis. Both of them worked in the sitcom’s musical team. Together, they created a theme song that was most suitable for the show’s image.
