Moving beyond the eerie realm of Stranger Things‘ Upside Down, the Duffer Brothers are embarking on a new creative journey. Alongside David Harbour’s involvement, the masterminds behind the popular series are venturing into the adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s 1984 novel, The Talisman, exclusively for Netflix. This collaboration is set to fuse the talents of the Duffer Brothers, Steven Spielberg, and Paramount Television, promising a captivating blend of fantasy, horror, and science fiction.

Netflix is set to welcome an adaptation of The Talisman, featuring the combined talents of Stephen King and Spielberg. Spielberg’s admiration for King and Straub’s work led him to secure the novel’s rights years ago. Now the project is finally taking shape. King’s recent announcement adds a new dimension to the endeavor as he contemplates penning a second sequel. Following The Talisman and Black House, which was published in 2001, this marks the next chapter in the tale.

During a conversation, King was queried about the possibility of crafting another dense, grand-scale epic similar to IT, The Stand, and Under the Dome. In response, King shared on the Talking Sacred podcast, “Before he died, Peter sent me this long letter and said, ‘We aught to do the third one’”. The prospect of this project entails incorporating both his and Straub’s individual ideas. This will potentially result in a lengthy book if King summons the courage to see it through. Although the first two books of the trilogy diverge significantly, they are intricately linked by the character Jack Sawyer.

Netflix’s ongoing affair with Stephen King

If the ambitious project to bring The Talisman to fruition finds success, it will mark the fifth instance of a Stephen King adaptation making its debut on the Netflix stage. Netflix has already showcased adaptations like Gerald’s Game. Notably, both Carla Gugino and Chiara Aurelia earned accolades aplenty for their exceptional performances. They have set new standards of excellence in the world of suspense and horror.

1922 also stemmed from King’s literary treasure trove. Adding to this illustrious lineup, the year 2017 witnessed the emergence of a cinematic rendition. One was his novella In the Tall Grass, penned alongside his own son. In the year 2022, a full-fledged cinematic interpretation of Mr. Harrington’s Phone was unveiled. This release further solidified Netflix’s presence as a notable player in the horror genre. Thanks to their successful adaptations of King’s literary works.
