Arnold Schwarzenegger, King of One-Liners, Remembers His Face-off With a Writer for His Most Iconic Line on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’

It is quite typical for legendary celebrities to develop their personal trademarks to set themselves apart from the crowd. From Leonardo DiCaprio’s brilliant toasts to Tom Cruise’s sprinting scenes, there are many signature moves of celebrities that are identified solely with them. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Hollywood giant, is popular for having the best action movie quotes of all time. His trademark is to deliver iconic one-liners either just before or just after he kills a bad guy. 

The 76-year-old recently appeared as a guest on the late-night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! During the interview, he recalled an instance when he had a disagreement with a writer over his most iconic one-liner.

As the writer’s strike has come to an end, many late-night talk shows are making their comeback after a dark hiatus of five months. From The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the night owls now have plenty of good reasons to stay awake. Schwarzenegger kicked off Kimmel’s show on Monday, where the host initiated a conversation about the actor’s “classic one-liners.” 

Kimmel asked The Terminator star if had foreseen his iconic phrase “I’ll be back” to become such a huge pop culture reference. To which the star revealed that he, in fact, did not like the line and appealed to the writer to change it. The Commando actor shared he wanted to remove the contraction in the one-liner, making it “I will be back”. However, the writer put his foot down about altering the line and told the actor off for interfering.

And thank goodness he made that move because I’ll be back” went on to become Schwarzenegger’s trademark catchphrase. However, it is still not the favorite punchline of the legendary action star.

The iconic catchphrase undoubtedly serves as the symbol of the Golden Age of Hollywood. The star also used this line as a reference in many of his other projects, including his PARKSIDE advertisement. On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Schwarzenegger did a little skit with Kimmel and again referenced his 1984 movie. However, while reacting to a tweet, the actor revealed his favorite punchline was not the one he said as the cyborg assassin.

A fan asked the Austrian Oak if he banned reporters from asking about his first film, which was a box-office failure. The movie also faced heavy criticism for Schwarzenegger’s heavy Austrian accent. Replying to the fan, the Commando actor revealed that Hercules in New York had one of his favorite punchlines. However, it was unclear which punchline was the former bodybuilder referencing in his tweet.
