Another Blow for ‘Barbie’ as Piers Morgan Joins Shakira in Throwing Shade at It
Barbie quickly became a hotbed for political discussion the moment it hit the screens. Despite a clever marketing campaign that made it a social media darling, sparking parties, trendy events, and fashion crazes, Barbie was not a film that pleased everyone. Some viewed it as a satire of gender norms and male authority, while others saw it as an ode to timeless femininity. These diverse readings of the movie sparked both praise as a feminist statement and criticism for allegedly being anti-men.
Recently, the Latin pop sensation Shakira voiced her thoughts on the movie, and they were not exactly positive. And now, adding to the mix, Piers Morgan has decided to get in on the discussion too.

Barbie is often seen as a symbol of female empowerment. But not everyone agrees. Shakira recently shared with Allure that her sons "absolutely hated" the movie, finding it "emasculating". She added, "And I agree, to a certain extent." Reacting to the statement, the English broadcaster Piers Morgan took to X, formerly Twitter, stating, "Finally, a high-profile woman prepared to stand up for men being men" criticizing the movie. Even in the past, the journalist has thrown shade at the Greta Gerwig blockbuster.
In July of last year, Piers Morgan made his voice heard with a full op-ed in the New York Post, suggesting that feminists would come down on him like a ton of bricks if he dared to propose a Barbie for men. "I'd be executed," Morgan penned. While there are clearly those who do not see eye to eye with Gerwig's societal vision, others are already banging the drum for a Barbie sequel, just one year after the film's release. And Gerwig has recently chimed in as well.
Greta Gerwig shared mixed feelings about making a sequel to Margot Robbie's popular movie after receiving a huge demand.

Back in August 2023, Greta Gerwig shared with PEOPLE about her hopes for her film to kick off a whole new world of Barbie movies. Fans latched onto that and began mulling over potential Barbie sequels and spinoffs. Then, just last month, in a chat with Deadline, the filmmaker confessed she was not “feeling” the need for one until recently. “I’m not dismissing it, I want to do it,” said the 40-year-old. Even the reactions from the movie's stars have been somewhat unclear.
Margot Robbie revealed to Time in June 2023 that discussions about sequels were ongoing, but nothing was finalized at the time. “It could go a million different directions from this point,” said the actress and producer. Meanwhile, at London’s BFI Southbank, Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera fielded questions about the possibility of Barbie 2. "We really know nothing,” he responded to a fan. Regardless of whether Barbie gets a sequel or not, the conversation that the movie has sparked is an exceptional achievement in itself.
