Princess Diana’s influence stretches far beyond her royal role. She reigns supreme as the 20th century’s ultimate fashion icon. Admitting to starting with a wardrobe as meager as “one long dress, one silk shirt, one smart pair of shoes” when she tied the knot with Prince Charles at 20, the Princess of Wales transformed into a sartorial sensation. From that point, she metamorphosed into a style icon, blending protocol with her flair for vibrant prints and colors.

In a recent auction, one of her iconic pieces set a record price for the sale of her gowns, along with many other popular clothing pieces from celebrities like Kim Kardashian.

Princess Diana’s 1985 dinner dress for sale 

An evening dress worn by the late Princess Diana recently sold for $1.1 million at Julien’s Auction, surpassing its estimated value by 11 times. This set a record for the highest price ever paid for one of her gowns, as confirmed by Los Angeles-based Julien’s Auctions. The black and blue ballerina-length dress, designed by Jacques Azagury, first made an appearance in Florence in 1985 and was later photographed during a visit to Vancouver a year later. 

The dress, along with a matching illustration, exceeded the initial estimate of $100,000-$200,000. It boasted a black velvet bodice adorned with metallic stars and a two-tier royal blue organza skirt featuring a sash and bow. Apart from Princess Diana’s dress, Kim Kardashian’s popular Chloé long ruffle front drape coat, which she wore during 2014 Paris Fashion Week, was also put for sale.

Kim Kardashian bought a $197,453 million worth Princess Diana piece

One would not typically associate Kim Kardashian’s style with Princess Diana’s. However, fans got to see an interesting overlap last year when Sotheby’s London confirmed that Kim Kardashian acquired the Attallah Cross – a cherished piece of jewelry once favored by the late Princess of Wales, Princess Diana. Kim Kardashian owned the London auction, outbidding the rest at a whopping $197,453.

The amethyst cross witnessed fierce competition from four bidders until a representative for Kardashian surpassed its pre-auction price by more than double. Princess Diana’s fondness for the piece was evident through her numerous appearances with it, including a memorable October 1987 moment when she elegantly paired it with a Catherine Walker dress at a Birthright charity gala. Despite belonging to different eras, Princess Diana and Kim Kardashian’s style mojo is still as rare as a hen’s teeth.
