According to Variety's latest report, the biblical drama The Life of Jesus, inspired by Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 novel, is hitting the pause button and will not be filming this year. While the cast is still under wraps, this Martin Scorsese flick, rumored to feature Andrew Garfield, was supposed to be the first of his two projects to kick off production. However, a source in the know says the project is still in development but is taking a little longer to get rolling.
Word on the street is that Scorsese is going the indie route to finance this flick, just like he did for his 2016 epic Silence, also adapted from an Endō novel. The Oscar-winning maestro had his sights on filming in Israel, Italy, and Egypt, but those locations still hang in the balance. The Life of Jesus is set to dive deep into human and divine aspects of Christ, much like he already did with The Last Temptation of Christ.
On the bright side, Garfield is already generating some early Oscar buzz for another project. However, another Martin Scorsese film faced a fate similar to The Life of Jesus.

According to Variety’s latest report, two Martin Scorsese films are hitting the brakes this year—one is The Life of Jesus, and the other a biopic about the legendary Frank Sinatra. Unfortunately, this Sinatra project has also been postponed and will not be filmed this year. It was originally set to start in November. However, multiple sources say that everyone involved—from artisans to key stakeholders—got the news in mid-August that the November date was a no-go, with no new schedule in sight.
Universal Pictures and Mandalay Pictures were supposed to produce the Sinatra biopic, with Phil Alden Robinson writing the screenplay. No studio has officially jumped on board yet, though Apple and Sony have been rumored to be sniffing around. So, fans might need to hang tight a little longer for some solid updates, because the recent news is not exactly the good stuff they hoped for.
