Amidst the Avengers and ‘Deadpool’ Hype, ‘Stranger Things’ Director Shawn Levy Accepts a Major Honor in His Home Country at TIFF

Shawn Levy received tremendous recognition for working with Ryan Reynolds in the Deadpool franchise. The Canadian producer-director has been making headlines for his association with the Netflix drama Stranger Things as well. Recently, there have been rumors about him directing the upcoming Marvel film, The Avenger: Secret Wars. Although there are just rumors about his association, the director himself did not reveal anything about it.

While The Adam Project director is secretive about his future projects, he was publicly honored at the TIFF Tribute Awards 2023. He had a major announcement about his newest Netflix project at the TIFF as well.

Shawn Levy received an honor at his hometown

The Toronto International Film Festival presents the annual TIFF Tribute Awards to recognize outstanding contributions in filmmaking. This year, the Deadpool director received the inaugural Norman Jewison Award presented by The Budman Family. The purpose of this award is to acknowledge Canadians in the film industry who have made a global impact on their careers. This year, this honor went to the Free Guy director. As the Canadian artist received the award, he expressed his heartfelt emotions and gratitude.

Thanking all his fans, Levy also expressed his gratitude to the organizing committee for “putting out a world-class celebration of film and television here in Toronto.” Announcing the premiere of his other project, All The Light We Cannot See, Levy showcased his excitement. He added, “Just to be in this forum in my homeland, being able to share the work that I continue to love doing is really a gift.”

The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel inspired the Netflix series. It narrates the story of courage, hope, love, and human connection. It will air on the streaming giant on the 2nd of November. However, the 2 of its episodes premiered at the TIFF 2023. And the 55-year-old director became overwhelmed while speaking about it during his speech. Additionally, Levy also expressed his uncertainty about the presenter of the Norman Jewison Award as well.

The Academy Awards nominated director doubted Taika Waititi

As happy as Levy was about receiving the award, he also had reservations about how Waititi would present the director. Levy expressed uncertainty during his speech about whether the 48-year-old artist would make reference to his work. Fortunately, the portrayal of the director in Real Steel was satisfactory to him. He even praised Waititi and called him a genius as well.

Before receiving this big honor, his buddy, Ryan Reynolds, also celebrated this occasion. He gave a major shout-out to his long-term director friend on his Instagram. Now, as the fan-favorite director received this honor, his fans also celebrated on the internet.
