Deadpool & Wolverine has finally broken into the billionaire club. In its third weekend, the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer officially became only the second R-rated movie ever to crack the $1 billion mark at the box office. The superhero movie currently stands at $1.029 billion, the 11th MCU movie to do so. However, even though the Shawn Levy-directed film has dodged the dreaded superhero fatigue, one film gave it a real run for its money- Blake Lively’s It Ends With Us.

Despite the face-off between Reynolds and Lively at the box office, the 'It' couple found themselves with one big milestone to toast to.

This summer’s box office took a dramatic turn for the better, all thanks to Hollywood’s power couple, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. For the first time ever, two films grossed over $50 million in the same weekend. It is also the first time in 34 years that a married couple has seen their films top the domestic box office, a feat last achieved by Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. Since the release of It Ends With Us, the romantic drama has been giving Deadpool & Wolverine a strong fight at the box office.

The Colleen Hoover book adaptation became the #1 movie in the UK, surpassing the superhero film. However, contrary to expectations, It Ends With Us could not knock Deadpool & Wolverine from the top spot at the box office in its third weekend. While the Justin Baldoni-directed film made $50 million, Deadpool & Wolverine grossed $54.2 million. But even with the Ryan Reynolds starrer making a billion-dollar at the box office, there is another R-rated movie on the way that could steal its thunder.

The 2019 Joker was one of the most successful comic book movies ever made. It was also the first R-rated movie to cross the $1 billion mark at the box office. While it is often the case that sequels see a dip in box office performance, Joker: Folie à Deux could defy the odds. The reason being, its unique format- a jukebox musical featuring Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. This could create the right amount of intrigue to bring in a larger crowd.

The original Joker succeeded because it broke the mold of typical superhero movies, and Joker: Folie à Deux is pushing the envelope even further. This could lead to an even bigger win than the first film, both critically and financially, and top Deadpool & Wolverine as the best comic book movie of 2024. But for now, it is the Lively-Reynolds household that is ruling the box office with the top two films of the summer.
