Almost 50 Years After Inception, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan’s Efforts to Get Academy’s Recognition?
Justin Hurwitz aptly wrote “City of Stars, there’s so much that I Can’t See.” This is because, despite years of risking their lives for a hoot and clap at the cinemas, there is no category celebrating stunts at the Oscars. And while this is discriminatory to many, nothing beats the right it steals from legends like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan.
It is baffling to find that the genre that was used as a lifeline to bring movie theaters back to life at numerous points in history does not get its due recognition in what is considered the most notable award in the film industry. However, it seems after decades of Arnold Schwarzenegger climbing on moving cars and Jackie Chan jumping out of skyscrapers, someone is finally telling the Oscars what they can do instead of making Will Smith slap jokes.

The esteemed council that makes up the Academy that ultimately chooses who gets the Oscar has long deprived the audiences and action legends of a ‘best stunt’ category. However, through a conversation between Chad Stahelski and Comic Book Movie, it becomes clear that it is not just the Academy’s cross to bear. It seems no one has sat down to have an official conversation with the concerned authorities. Even though heavyweights like Schwarzenegger and James Cameron have long been advocating for it.
The John Wick director said, “We’ve been meeting with members of the Academy.” This gives hope to the action genre.
While this definitely calls for a celebration, it still makes one frustrated at the life-threatening stunts that the actors did in the name of entertainment.

Jackie Chan won an honorary Oscar for his achievements in 2016. And Schwarzenegger was among the loudest cheerleaders of this victory. However, he never got one of his own. This is probably why he even called the Oscars boring. The 75-year-old since the beginning of his career has been fighting with swords, jumping out of choppers, and walking on moving cars.
There is one that scared even James Cameron. Terminator 2 consists of a fight sequence where the cyborg assassin gets out of a moving car to shoot. And Arnold Schwarzenegger did it all on his own. All this, despite moving an entire generation of moviegoers to place him on a pedestal, did not move the Oscars to grant him an award.
