Alex Gibney’s Elon Musk Documentary Hits a TikTok Roadblock as It Takes Off

Elon Musk has rarely been far from the spotlight, and Alex Gibney’s documentary about the billionaire has kept the conversation going. With Musk being frequently discussed in the public eye, the film has generated plenty of chatter ahead of its global release on October 16. However, its promotional campaign has hit an unexpected snag, with the documentary’s TikTok account taken down.
Social media has become an essential part of film marketing, helping documentaries reach audiences through clips, interviews, and viral moments. Now, one major promotional avenue for Alex Gibney’s Elon Musk documentary has abruptly disappeared, with its TikTok account shut down.
Musk's TikTok roadblock
Elon Musk is once again at the center of a digital storm, this time thanks to a documentary that has lost one of its biggest promotional platforms. Alex Gibney’s four-hour film Musk, which arrived globally on October 16, has had its TikTok advertising account permanently suspended. The timing is particularly striking, with the documentary expanding to more than 470 North American screens that same day.
TikTok reportedly cited violations of its policies on paid political advertising, although the platform has not specified which content prompted the ban. Shortly before the suspension, the account shared a promotional video suggesting viewers delete their X accounts during the film’s intermission, alongside another urging audiences to watch the documentary before it gets shut down. Whether either post triggered the decision remains unclear.

The TikTok setback adds another wrinkle to the documentary’s already complicated promotional journey. Elon Musk’s own platform, X, reportedly refused paid advertisements for the film, while Meta initially rejected trailer ads before reversing its decision, and YouTube lifted its temporary restrictions after reviewing the material. With Bleecker Street appealing TikTok’s decision, the film’s marketing campaign now faces another hurdle just as its theatrical release expands.
Meanwhile, despite the social media roadblocks, Musk has found a friendlier audience among critics, as its Rotten Tomatoes score suggests.
The critics' take on Musk
While TikTok has pulled the plug on one of Musk’s promotional channels, Alex Gibney’s four-hour documentary has received a mixed response from critics. Reviewers have praised its exhaustive journalism and unsettling examination of Elon Musk’s rise to power, particularly its Tesla Autopilot footage and interviews with his ex-wife, Justine Musk. However, others argue that the film offers little new to audiences already familiar with the billionaire’s public life.

The documentary has also drawn criticism for its lengthy runtime and creative choices, including an AI-generated avatar of Elon Musk that some reviewers found distracting. While certain critics have dismissed the film as one-sided propaganda, others consider it a gripping takedown. With TikTok permanently suspending its advertising account and other platforms raising promotional hurdles, Musk is attracting attention both for its subject and the debate surrounding its release.
