Beyond its legal intricacies, captivating cases, and unsympathetic defendants, its exceptional writing truly made it stand out. The dialogue is sharp, quick-witted, and dripping with sarcasm, capturing the essence of a classic New York legal narrative. Yet, Abigail Spencer does not credit the show’s resurgence only to its cinematic brilliance. 

In a recent interview, the actress credited Meghan Markle for the show’s resurgence, highlighting how the intrigue surrounding her contributed to a renewed interest in the series.

Abigail Spencer on Suits revival in 2023

Abigail Spencer made a guest appearance on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show on Friday. She spilled her “layered” opinions about why Suits continues to steal the limelight with fresh audiences even after four years. According to Spencer, audience interest in Meghan Markle and the former actress’  “loveliness” steered Suits toward a new streaming milestone. Additionally, she speculated that Markle and Prince Harry’s 2022 Netflix docuseries could be another driving force behind the revived interest, considering the shared streaming platform.

Spencer suggested that Netflix strategically promoted the nine-season show during last year’s writers and actors strike. This differed from Markle’s view, shared at Variety’s Power of Women Event, where she credited Suits revival to its binge-worthy nature. But what is the real cause behind this unforeseen surge in popularity for the series? According to Nielsen’s streaming charts, the series amassed over 12.8 billion minutes watched in the US in four weeks.

It has twice shattered the record for the most-streamed program in the US during a single measurement week. And, here is why 2023 has become the “summer of Suits.”

Potential reasons behind Suits resurgence

Suits making its way onto Netflix, the global streaming giant, is undoubtedly the driving force behind its current surge in popularity. The series occupied a sweet spot, drawing in both repeat viewers and first-timers. There is something about a TV show boasting 15+ episodes per season, where storylines unfold at a leisurely pace. In the era of remote work, there is also an inclination toward shows that can be enjoyed in the background over an extended period. Moreover, this summer and fall saw a standstill in the entertainment industry due to the strikes in Hollywood. 

With certain productions facing delays or cancellations, viewers are more inclined to discover a newly added series, making way for Suits’ revival. The cherry on top is the show’s extensive nine-season run, featuring 134 episodes for an indulgent binge at any given moment. However, one cannot still turn a blind eye to the fact that Meghan Markle, now holding the title Duchess of Sussex,  holds a key role in the series’ resurgence, as she has since risen to become one of the most prominent women worldwide.
