Weeks After Pulling out of ‘Sugar Bandits’, Will Smith Finally Set to Return to Netflix Screen With Michael Bay

Will Smith returned to the big screen earlier this year, with the 2024 blockbuster, Bad Boys: Ride or Die. But he is still missing from the small screens. The last time we saw him on Netflix was in 2017 with the urban fantasy flick Bright. While critics largely panned the movie, it was exceptionally popular with Netflix viewers. In fact, the film was viewed more times in its first week than any other Netflix release. Now, Smith is suiting up for another action-packed adventure on the streaming giant, teaming up with the very man who kick-started his action career.

Michael Bay first introduced Smith as an action hero in the 1995 classic, Bad Boys. Now, almost thirty years later, the duo is back in action.

Will Smith is in talks to headline a Michael Bay action flick, Fast and Loose. In the film, Smith would take on the role of a man who wakes up in Tijuana with no memory, only to discover he has been leading a double life as both a crime kingpin and a CIA agent. While nothing is set in stone just yet, Deadline recently reported that Michael Bay is in the final stages of locking down the director's chair for this Netflix action film. This news comes right after Smith passed on another thriller that was eyeing him for the lead.

Smith walked away from a high-budget action thriller Sugar Bandits, citing scheduling conflicts, which left the film crew in a bit of a bind as they scrambled to find a suitable replacement. However, while the Men in Black star will not be playing the lead in it, he will still serve as a producer with his production company, Westbrook. But this is not the only project he is producing.

Will Smith is reportedly stepping in to help his friend and Oscar nominee Queen Latifah share her story through an upcoming, but untitled biopic, as per Deadline. Latifah, the musician and actress, is not just a close friend of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith; she also made an appearance in the After Earth star's debut acting gig on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. This was also an opportunity that Smith helped her secure.

In a statement, Smith expressed his excitement about working on the project alongside his producing partners. He called Latifah “an undisputed legend” and stressed that there could not be a better music biopic to launch their lineup of amazing stories about hip-hop icons. While Smith is being a bit selective with his acting roles these days, it seems, he is fully committed to exploring his producing ventures.
