In 2019, Martin Scorsese remarked on the growing inclination among Netflix subscribers to consume content on the go, mainly on phones, driven by the platform's widespread accessibility. But little did he know that not all shared his sentiment like Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds told Variety during the New York premiere of Netflix’s 6 Underground that year in December, reflecting his dire opposition to Scorsese, that people should be allowed to watch whatever they want on “whatever f**king device” they desire.
Reynolds added it is “just the way things are”, so to put a limit on accessibility when Netflix leverages majorly on the same, should not be how things work. Scorsese, in an interview with Rolling Stone a month before, urged The Irishman viewers to refrain from watching it on phones, suggesting “an iPad, a big iPad” instead. Scorsese might have held some reservations for The Irishmen, lest it missed out on the slot of a bang-on cinematic experience.
The director of 6 Underground, Michael Bay, however, chose the middle path, opposing neither Reynolds nor Scorsese.

As a director, Michael Bay could neither do away with Martin Scorsese’s apprehension nor avoid the truth claim from Ryan Reynolds’ perspective. Hence, during the conversation with Variety, he pinned his stance both ways. Bay echoed Scorsese in sharing the fears of viewers watching their movies on phones. However, he also held the ground for Reynolds, who shares a special bond with Netflix.
Bay explained that despite his reservations like Scorsese, “movies aren’t that bad on the new TVs that have HDR”, speaking about the new-age smartphones. He acknowledged the best part about Netflix is that even though its ways are new, it has a strong voice over the public. Hence, that is the reason for his appreciation. Although Reynolds and Scorsese could not reach a compromise, Bay thankfully stepped in to bring a fresh perspective.
